How to back out 6% sales tax in Iowa

If you know a total that already includes Iowa sales tax and you need the sale figure underneath it, divide — do not subtract. The state rate in Iowa is 6%, so the divisor is 1.06.

Pre-tax price = Total ÷ 1.06
Sales tax = Total − Pre-tax price

This is the number most state returns actually ask for. Your card reader and your cash box both hand you a blended figure; the return wants sales and tax apart.

A worked example at the Iowa rate

A $100.00 total at 6% breaks down as $94.34 in sales and $5.66 in tax.

Across a show, $2,150.00 taken at that rate is $2,028.30 of sales with $121.70 of tax inside it.

The mistake that costs you money

Taking 6% off the total instead of dividing gives $129.00 of "tax" on that $2,150.00 day — against the correct $121.70. The gap is $7.30, and it runs the wrong way: you would under-report your sales and over-report the tax you collected.

The reason is simple. The 6% was applied to the smaller pre-tax figure, not to the total, so a percentage of the total is always too big.

When Iowa vendors need this

Local rates apply on top of the state rate in much of the country. If your venue's combined rate is higher than 6%, divide by 1 plus that combined rate instead — the method does not change. To go the other way, from price to tax, use the Iowa sales tax calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate reverse sales tax in Iowa?
Divide the tax-inclusive total by 1.06. A $100.00 total becomes $94.34 in sales and $5.66 in tax at the 6% state rate.
How do I back out Iowa sales tax from my day's takings?
Same division. $2,150.00 taken at 6% is $2,028.30 of sales with $121.70 of tax inside it.
Why can't I just subtract 6% from the total?
Because the rate applied to the pre-tax price, not the total. Subtracting 6% from $2,150.00 gives $129.00 of tax instead of the correct $121.70 — you would under-report sales and over-report tax.
What if local sales tax applies on top?
Use the combined rate. If the venue's total rate is higher than the 6% state rate, divide by 1 plus that combined figure. The method is identical.
What is the sales tax rate in Iowa?
The base state rate is 6%. Counties and cities may add their own on top in much of the country, so check the combined rate at the venue.
